Abstract

This article examines the place occupied by the problem of memory in Truth and Method by Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002). The central thesis of this work is that although the word ‘memory’ is dealt with very little in this magnum opus –unlike concepts such as experience, historicity, and language– it is a central concept for understanding our relationship with the past, tradition, and history. In the following, this article tries to show, firstly the experience of memory as an essential element of the historical being; secondly, it proposes to understand what the role is of prejudices and tradition in the appropriation of the past; and lastly, it tries to understand the relationship between memory and language, as a synthesizing center and mediator between the present and the past. For Gadamer, memory always supposes a fusion of horizons, which is liable to be modified by the meeting of new historical perspectives.
