Letters from Martin Heidegger to Friedrich-Wilhelm von Herrmann (1956–1974)

Abstract

On August 2, 2022, Prof. Dr. Friedrich-Wilhelm von Herrmann passed away in Freiburg. In 2023, the journal Heidegger Studien, in its volume 39, paid a heartfelt tribute to him, who, in addition to being Martin Heidegger’s last personal assistant, was the principal editor of the philosopher’s complete edition [Gesamtausgabe]. This tribute consisted of publishing texts that highlight von Herrmann’s thinking and included the correspondence he maintained with Martin Heidegger from 1956 to 1974. ApareSER. Revista de Filosofía publishes here the Spanish translation of these letters not only as a historiographical document concerning one of the great philosophies of the twentieth century, but also as a sincere homage to Prof. Friedrich-Wilhelm von Herrmann, who dedicated much of his life to training generations of scholars in the work of Martin Heidegger. Many Latin Americans, myself included, deepened our understanding of Heidegger’s work thanks to the generosity and guidance of Prof. von Herrmann. Through this publication, I also wish to express my profound gratitude.
